Technical challenge
Placing 800 m³ in a single 10-hour window requires an average of 80 m³ per hour sustained with no gap at the placing face — through Bangalore traffic, across plant changeovers and shift changes. On top of the logistics, a raft of this size generates significant hydration heat, so the mix had to stay inside mass-concrete temperature-differential limits while still gaining strength on the programme.
Our solution
Two plants were run in parallel on a locked dispatch schedule with GPS-tracked truck headways, standby mixers held in reserve and two pumps on site so a single breakdown could not stall the pour. The mix used fly ash and GGBS to lower peak hydration temperature and extend workability retention, with retarder dosed to the haul time of each batch. Cube sampling ran through the pour and thermocouple monitoring continued into the curing period. The full 800 m³ went in inside the 10-hour window.
