    Segregation

    // Definition

    The separation of coarse aggregate from cement paste in fresh concrete. Causes honeycombing and weak spots.

    Caused by excessive vibration, free-fall placement, or poorly designed mix. Limit free fall to 1.5 m and avoid over-vibration.

    Workability

    The ease with which fresh concrete can be mixed, transported, placed, compacted, and finished without segregation.

    Bleeding

    The migration of water to the surface of freshly placed concrete. Excessive bleeding weakens the surface and creates a porous top layer.
